PHILADELPHIA -- Marlon Byrd drove in two runs and the Philadelphia Phillies knocked around Jose Fernandez in one of his worst major league starts, beating the Miami Marlins 6-3 Friday night to snap a four-game skid. Phillies starter A.J. Burnett left in the fourth inning because of a sore groin, but Philadelphia chased Fernandez (2-1) with three runs in the fifth en route to its first home win of the season. Fernandez, last seasons NL Rookie of the Year, was tagged for eight hits and a career-worst six earned runs in four-plus innings. The right-hander walked four, matching a career high, and struck out six. He gave up only one run over 18 innings in three appearances against Philadelphia last season. Derek Dietrich homered for the Marlins, who lost their fifth straight. Miami has been outscored 32-13 during the slide. Byrd had two hits, including a double. Chase Ultey and Jimmy Rollins also had two hits for the Phillies, outscored 25-10 by Milwaukee this week in their first home series of the season. The Brewers won all three games for their first sweep in Philadelphia. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save in three chances. Philadelphia quickly jumped on Fernandez, scoring two runs in the first thanks to Byrds RBI double and Domonic Browns RBI single. Byrd has six hits and seven RBIs in his last four games. After the Marlins tied it at 2 in the second on Dietrichs drive to right-centre, Philadelphia went ahead 3-2 in the third thanks to Fernandezs wildness. The Phillies loaded the bases with a pair of walks and Utleys single before Fernandez walked in the go-ahead run with a free pass to Ryan Howard. Then, the hard-throwing righty returned to form by striking out the next three batters, featuring a fastball that reached 98 mph. He whiffed all three in the fourth for six straight strikeouts -- all swinging. Fernandez, however, was shaky in the fifth when Philadelphia opened the inning with four straight hits, the last of which was Byrds RBI single that ended Fernandezs night. Kevin Slowey limited the Phillies to just one more run, charged to Fernandez, but the damage had been done. Burnett was removed with one out in the fourth after walking Casey McGehee to load the bases on four pitches that werent even close. Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan went to the mound with manager Ryne Sandberg to pull Burnett from the game. He had thrown 106 pitches. Left-hander Jake Diekman (1-0) relieved Burnett and wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam by striking out Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Dietrich. Jeff Bakers eighth-inning sacrifice fly pulled Miami to 6-3. NOTES: Rollins had two walks to give him 694 for his career, moving into sixth place in Phillies history. ... Adidas NMD Cs1 Suomi .Y. -- As if the worst start in franchise history isnt bad enough, Buffalo Sabres President Ted Black braced his teams win-starved fans for potentially more tough times.Harlequins director of rugby Conor OShea reckons England prop Joe Marler would have endured a hostile reception in Australia had he not withdrawn from the summer tour. Marler has been mired in controversy this season after being banned for a racial slur on Samson Lee of Wales during the Six Nations and for committing an act of foul play against Grenoble hooker Arnaud Heguy while playing front-row for Harlequins. After speaking to England head coach Eddie Jones, Marler decided to pull out of the Test against Wales on Sunday week and three-match series against the Wallabies on the grounds he is not in the right frame of mind to play international rugby. OShea believes it is the right decision and recalls the hostility displayed towards Marler by Montpellier fans before kick-off in Fridays Challenge Cup final in Lyon. When I heard the reaction from the French crowd that he got when his name was read out in Lyon last weekend all I could think was thank God hes not on the pitch to hear that, OShea said.I was down in Australia in 1994 and I remember trying to put in a contact lens, my picture being put up on the big screen, and someone saying, go back and put on your makeup. Conor OShea, Harlequins director of rugby You know Australia will not be backwards in coming forward and all things considered they have made the decision that is right for Joe in the long term.ddddddddddddI know what hes gone through over the last few months and I respect whatever decision he and Eddie have made. And Marler indicated the pressure of a troubled season has taken its toll on him.It has been a very enjoyable but sometimes difficult season, said Marler in a statement released by the Rugby Football Union. After speaking to Eddie I have decided that the best thing for me is to take a rest and not go to Australia.Whenever you play for England you have to be 100 per cent and unfortunately Im not in that place at the moment. Its not a decision Ive come to lightly, but I feel I would be letting my team-mates and my country down if I were to tour. Also See: Marler pulls out of tour Marler banned again ' ' '
